An operating system is a collection of software that handles many of the functions needed as "infrastructure" to allow programs to be used by people.
These include displaying information on a screen, giving information programs which come from detecting a mouse and how it is moved, and giving information to programs by detecting keys pressed on a keyboard. Many times an operating system also handles output of sounds or music.
