Adding an Executable to the CPRS Tools Menu

In these examples, the Microsoft Windows Executable (program) that will be added is called exampleprogram.exe.

  • Decide whether to copy the exampleprogram.exe to a shared folder on a network resource or individually to each user's workstation.
  • Installation to a shared network resource is generally recommended:
  • If adequate network bandwidth is available
  • If the server/shared resource is on a fast machine
  • If the executable does not require specialized installation program on a local machine
  • If the executable does not support a "GOLD COPY" update process
  • If the executable program is stored on a server/shared resource, a server-based folder and corresponding share name must be created. Follow the organizational plan already established on your network for naming computers and shares.
  • If an operating system other than the Microsoft Windows operating system is used on the server/shared resource, it is still important that SAMBA (or other network file system) works properly with the operating systems of all client machines on the network.
  • Ensure the proper folder- or share-level permissions to allow user access to exampleprogram.exe on the server/shared resource.
  • If the executable program file is placed in a shared location, the UNC path to that location can be used in the setup below. (In the example below, a share name of VistA is used.) If the executable program file is placed individually on each client workstation, the local path (to the file) must be used.
  • [OR PARAM COORDINATOR] -> GUI Parameters -> GUI TOOL MENU ITEMS

CPRS GUI Tools Menu may be set for the following:

1 User USR [choose from NEW PERSON]
2 Location LOC [choose from HOSPITAL LOCATION]
2.5 Service SRV [choose from SERVICE/SECTION]
3 Division DIV [choose from INSTITUTION]
4 System SYS (will vary by site)
9 Package PKG [REMOTE ORDER ENTRY SYSTEM]

Determine which scope selection is appropriate (based on the facility's established practice(s) regarding management of the Tools menu). Ensure that the options associated with the executable program are added with the appropriate level of granularity, so that the option is available to all identified individual users.

Enter selection: # of your choice Make your choice from the selected file: Select Sequence: 1 if none exist or 1 greater than the highest number Name=Command: ToolMenuText="\\servername\sharename\exampleprogram.exe" DFN=%DFN DUZ=%DUZ Optionally, you may append (after adding a space) s=server name and p=port number.

  • Re-enter the CPRS menu to verify that the applications appear on the tools list.
  • See the CPRS Technical Manual for further instructions.

Note: This process is similar to the installation instructions for all other RPC Broker-enabled applications, such as CPRS, BCMA, CAPRI and PCMM.
